The “Crosscreek State Hospital” was constructed in the 1880’s and was expanded many times over the years. The hospital was opened in order to house people deemed “criminally insane,” and therefore, the complex was constructed similar to a prison, and unlike psychiatric hospitals built to cure mental illness, this facility was build in order for people to be locked up for committing crimes due to mental illness. The complex had wings for patients of different levels of “insanity,” however the hospital was built in a prison-type layout all around. The complex had many different courtyards, featuring basketball hoops, and social activities for inmates. The facility also had an auditorium within its walls, where performances and movies were shown for inmates. In 1967 a legislative committee investigated allegations of "cruel, inhuman, and barbarous treatment” within the walls of the facility, which led to further investigation. In the 1970’s, multiple newer facilities began to be built on the property. For example, a more modern facility for the criminally insane, a general correctional facility, and a drug/ rehab facility were all constructed on campus, and continue to operate today. The construction of the new facility led to the closure of the old one, which left it abandoned, leading to the old complex falling into disrepair, and being lost with time. As of now, the original complex is fully abandoned, however the police use the courtyards inside the walls of the abandoned buildings for training, where they set up a shooting range, and perform K9 training. While there is much activity on this property from the prison, and the new hospital facility, the old State Hospital for the '“Criminally Insane” directly adjacent to it remains abandoned, with no signs of a bright future for the historic complex.
note: I gave this album an alias name to protect the property from any vandalism, and out of respect for the patients, inmates, and staff who still live/ work on the grounds.
