The Hagedorn Sanatorium in Glen Gardner, New Jersey was built, and opened on a hilltop in 1907 after the rise of the Tubercolosis disease. New Jersey then built the sanatorium under the name of “The New Jersey Sanatorium for Tuberculosis Diseases” also known as the “Glen Gardner Tuberculosis Hospital.” The Hospital would treat many Tubercolosis patients with up to date treatments, treating over 10,000 patients over the course of under 30 years. After being successfully operated, the hospital began to see patients with any type of respiratory infections once they realized that they could treat multiple types of diseases once Tuberculosis grew faint. Along with this hospital, many other Tubercolosis sanatoriums begun expanding in their types of care in the 1960’s. In 1977, the hospital was renamed the Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital as it became a 288 bed hospital for the mentally challenged. Eventually, as the majority of state mental institutions began to see a decline in patients, one of the buildings on the campus closed at an unknown date, likely around 30 years ago. However, in 2012, the Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital was officially fulling closed down by the state of New Jersey, and was left vacant, and abandoned. As of now, a newer rehabilitation center for Veterans is in use on the property, but other than that, the old sanatorium remains abandoned, irking the curiosity of trespassers, being ghost hunters, photographers, and vandals. To this day, the historic buildings remain abandoned, and falling into disrepair.
