The Port Richmond Generating Station in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was constructed in 1915, and was put into commission in 1925 as a coal-burning power plant. The beautiful power plant was built in a neoclassical cathedral style, and was operated to power many parts of Philadelphia, while also being a visually attractive building that workers, and bystanders could enjoy to see everyday. Years later, due to lack of anticipated power demands, and with new power plants being built in the area, the Port Richmond Generating Station was shut down, and left abandoned in 1985. Today, the power plant has sat abandoned for decades decaying, and attracting vandals, scrappers, and explorers. Almost the entirety of the ceiling has fallen down, exposing the massive turbine hall to exterior weather. Recently, some work has been done professionally, removing valuable equipment from the power plant, however, there is still no clear plan on what will happen to this beautiful, dilapidated structure.
