The Middletown State Homeopathic Hospital (later named the Middletown Psychiatric Center) in Middletown, New York was opened in 1874 and was the first purely homeopathic hospital for mental disorders in the United States. This hospital was revolutionary at the time of its opening. The hospital’s establishment was inspired by John Stanton Gould’s 1866 speech to the State Homeopathic Medical Society. In John Stanton’s speech The Relation of Insanity to Bodily Disease, he stated that mental illness was a symptom of bodily disease, and that things such as “regulation of diet and regimen…habit training, rest and seclusion…cleanliness, kindness, proper education diversion; occupational therapy; psychotherapy of all sorts” and all uses of nature were all important methods in the healing process for the mentally impaired. The original campus of the Middletown State Homeopathic Hospital included a complex of high-victorian gothic buildings that would correlate to the homeopathic idea with the architecture, and layout of the buildings. Sadly, all but one wing of the main complex was demolished many years ago, and newer buildings were added as the hospital expanded in patients. In the 1950’s and on, buildings such as Tuckerman Hall (patient housing), and the Klenier Building (the recreation center) were added to the campus during expansion. In the 1960s, the institution reached its peak with nearly 4,000 patients, which led to overcrowding. Like the majority of state mental institutions, the now named Middletown Psychiatric Center began to see a decline in patients as psychotropic drugs such as thorazine came into play. This took away from the homeopathic idea which was brought to the institution in its early days. In the 80’s, many buildings on the campus were shutting down, and by 2006, the entire campus would close, and be left abandoned. In the years since the hospital has been abandoned, it has become a spark for curiousity among many people. Photographers, ghost hunters, and vandals have been making their way into the abandoned buildings, speeding up the damage in many buildings that are left. Sadly, the last remaining wing of the original 1870’s complex was mysteriously burned down in 2015. As of now, there are a few buildings from the early 1900’s left on the property, and in more recent years, some have been acquired by the Fei Tian College, and the Academy of the Arts. The campus is also now home to the Cornell Cooperative Extension, two homeless shelters, the northern summer camp, an extension of the Rockland Psychiatric Center, and more. The majority of these uses on the campus take place in buildings originally used for the Middletown State Homeopathic Hospital (psychiatric center), however, despite this being an open campus, many buildings still remain abandoned with no current future plans.
